Team Scooby, SWA’s own racing team, competed at the F24 International Finals at Rockingham last Sunday. The finals included two teams from the USA and two cars from Poland, as well as the top 80 cars from the UK’s best schools, universities and some of the top graduate engineer teams from the likes of Lockheed Martin, Jaguar and Perkins Engines to name just a few.
Race one was for under 16s and despite a confident start, the batteries did not live up to their expectations and left us dead on the circuit. This pushed us down from our longstanding position of around 12th place to a final position of 53rd. The 24+ race came next for the over 16s. This also included the ‘Corporate Challenge’ , an open competition for any company to enter. This was always going to be a challenge as there were a host of expensive and quality engineering in the 24+ teams. We finished a very respectable 23rd in the race, only just behind Team USA (designed by NASA) in 21st and Lockhead Martin Defence Systems in 18th. This resulted in Team Scooby F24+ team taking 11th place in the world. When you discount the graduates and companies, that leaves us about 6th. Our best ever 24+ season. The start of the final F24 race was a carbon copy of the first, but the batteries were better, the driver changes faster and we held it together better towards the end. We did die on the last lap, but achieved a respectable placing of 22nd from a starting grid of 70 of the best cars in the world. That concludes the racing for another year, many thanks to the staff and parents who supported us and all the very early starts and to the kind support from our sponsors this year Bosch-Rexroth. Plans are already in place to make improvements for next year.
